But even 12 years after William Reed took over Johnny Brenda’s and made it the Avenue’s shining welcome beacon, the best days for the corridor are still ahead of it.

Front Street Cafe Now Open All Day

front-street-cafe-940After gradually expanding its operations from breakfast into lunch/brunch, then into dinner, Fishtown’s Front Street Cafe celebrated with an official opening party last night.

The restaurant at Front and Thompson streets had been the subject of much buzz in the months leading up to its opening, and now that it’s open from wake-up call to last call, it’s already attracted a local following.

A Fishtowner of my acquaintance said that it was already “the place for meetings” in the area, which includes next-door South Kensington and Northern Liberties. The second-floor dining area, where sofas and armchairs keep the tables company, is well suited to handle such functions.

Front Street Cafe: Proof a Healthy (and Delicious!) Grab-and-Go Breakfast Is Possible

This morning, I made my way over to Fishtown’s newly opened Front Street Cafe at the corner of Front and Thompson Streets, steps away from the subway, excited to feast on all sorts of healthy breakfast delights in the name of work (yeah, my job is pretty awesome sometimes). So when I got there, I was bummed to find out that they have yet to complete their menu (they just opened Monday), so until mid-October, they’re only slinging stuff from their juice and coffee bar — smoothies, made-to-order juices, tons of teas, lattes and such — along with pre-made fare.

But turns out, this limited selection actually led to a really useful discovery: Front Street Cafe has already mastered the art of the healthy grab-and-go breakfast, a truly difficult thing to get your hands on on those desperate mornings when you’re starving, short on time, and not trying to eat a Starbucks breakfast sandwich or a calorie-heavy bagel with cream cheese.  Read more »
