PW Reader Ring: Michelle & Michael!
The couple: Michelle DiIorio and Michael Hennessey from Manayunk.
The ring: My ring is a princess-cut diamond solitaire in a cathedral setting. The band is white gold and has diamonds across it, making the solitaire diamond pop even more! The ring is exactly how I described it to him: my dream ring!
Mike is a teacher and has the summers off. So one summer day, he traveled back to his hometown during to go to his family jeweler, Murphy Jewelers in Hamburg, and I had no idea he even went, because he travelled there and back before I even returned from work!
Although he knew exactly what I wanted, his parents met him at the jeweler each time he went and helped him choose the perfect ring. It too him two different trips to pick it out!
The proposal: Every year, we take a family vacation to Ocean City, Maryland. We had an ocean-front condo that summer for two weeks. During our last week there, one of my best friends, Kirsten, and her boyfriend, Scott, had also planned to vacation there. The night they were “expected” to arrive, my fiancé had asked me if I wanted to have a picnic on the beach for dinner. I said yes, of course! How romantic! We got take-out from our favorite reataurant, Crab Cake Factory, and Mike bought the bottle of wine we shared when he had asked me to be his girlfriend in June 2009. Bella Sera has been one of our favorite wines since then.
We finished our dinner and wine, and Mike asked if I wanted to take a walk down to the ocean and see the waves crash. When I stood up to go, he just hugged me and held me tight. He said “I love you,” and I replied, “I love you too.” I then noticed his extremely fast heart beat, and before I knew it, Mike was down on one knee holding out my perfect ring in front of me. He asked, “Will you marry me?” I immediately started to cry and happily, I exlaimed, “Yes!”
Mike then slipped my ring on my finger and we embraced excitedly. In the same moment, I heard Kirsten exclaim, “Michelle!” and our family from the condo balcony also cheering on! Mike had planned Kirsten to hide in the sand dunes all throughout dinner to take pictures of the proposal, while his family secretly watched us from the balcony above! Having pictures of the proposal was something I had requested, and Mike went a step further and had my best friend and family members watching the whole thing! The fact that he included them meant the world to me. It was a very special night for all of us!
The band: We have not bought our wedding bands yet, but I certainly have ideas! I would like my band to match the band around my engagement ring: white gold and little diamonds across it. For our one year anniversary, we plan on purchasing a second band, exactly the same as the first, to add to the other side of the rings.
