10 Coolest Fitness and Foodie Events in Philly: June 2016
The fact that June is somehow already right around the corner blows my mind. Time flies when you’re packing your schedule with fitness fun, it seems. And speaking of packing your schedule with fitness fun, you’ll find our top 10 picks for filling your schedule this month below. Happy sweating, friends!
1. Be Well Philly Boot Camp
When: Saturday, June 4th at 9 a.m.
Where: Drexel Recreation Center, 3301 Market Street, University City.
Go ahead, call us shameless, but Be Well Philly Boot Camp is one of our absolute favorite days of summer. Scratch that, it’s one of our absolute favorite days of the year — and we’re pretty sure it will land on your list of favorites, too, once you get a taste of it. The ladies-only annual event is packed with everything from fitness classes (hello, Beyoncé Boot Camp) to healthy cooking demos with Philly chefs like Vedge’s Rich Landau to inspirational speakers. It kicks off in the morning with breakfast, this year courtesy of Snap Kitchen (!!), and ends with a well-deserved happy hour. Seriously, people: It’s the best day ever. If you want in, snag your ticket here before they’re are all gone.
2. Summer Scurry for Sangrias 5K
When: Saturday, June 25th at 5 p.m.
Where: Hawk Haven Vineyards, 600 South Railroad Avenue, Rio Grande
This just might be the most epic happy hour run ever: This 5K, one of Run the Vineyards many races, takes you on a course along a wooded trail and through the scenic Hawk Haven Vineyards, ending with — you guessed it! — free sangria for all at the finish line, along with live music. See? Most epic happy hour run ever.
3. Seafood Butchery Essentials at Volvér
When: Thursday, June 16th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: 300 South Broad Street, Center City.
Garces Summer School (seriously, that’s a thing) is in session, people. There are plenty of hands-on cooking classes to choose from, but when it comes to honing your skills to aid your healthy diet, the seafood butchery class — where you’ll learn how to master the art of butchering and preparing seafood at home — fits the bill best.
4. Global Running Day
When: Wednesday, June 1st, all day.
Where: Everywhere!
Bust out those sneakers! Global Running Day is tomorrow and you can celebrate anywhere, at any time, so you really have no excuse to skip out on the festivities. You don’t have to go it alone, though — there are a bunch of structured activities for you to join in on, too. To name a few: Queen Village’s Zakti will be hosting a free runners’ recovery class, Suzanne Allaire from the November Project will be leading a free lunchtime run (that ends with Honeygrow smoothies for the first 100 finishers!), and the folks from Back on My Feet will be hosting an all-day treadmill challenge. Take your pick!
5. Grand Opening of SoulCycle Ardmore
When: Saturday, June 4th.
Where: 2 Coulter Avenue, Ardmore.
If you’ve been waiting with bated breath to get your booty on a SoulCycle bike, the time has finally come! The studio opened the doors to its first Philly-area studio this past weekend, and if you were busy getting your Memorial Day on down the Shore, don’t fret: They won’t be holding their grand opening festivities — which include a photo booth, juice for all, balloon artists and face painters (say whaaat?) and giveaways — until next weekend. The fun will be going down throughout the day, so just sign up for a class to get in on the action.
6. Yoga at the Market launches
When: At various times weekly; see times here.
Where: At multiple locations; see location here.
The folks from Yoga on the Banks, the donation-based yoga series at the Schuylkill Banks, are launching a brand-spankin’-new donation-based yoga series this June. Drumroll, please: Meet Yoga at the Market, a seasonal yoga series that will be held weekly at three farmers’ markets around Philly throughout the warmer months. So you can get your downward dog on, then get your weekly grocery shopping on. Amazing, right?
7. The Saucony Mile
When: Friday, June 17th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: 50 Airport Road, Pottstown.
This race wins in a number of ways: For one, it’s only a mile long. And I mean, does anything really beat a mile-long race? Two, the race is run on the runway of the Pottstwon/Limerick Airport. How cool is that? And three, the race ends with a beer and burger garden — with free beer for runners of 21! See? Winning.
8. ODDyssey Half Marathon
When: Sunday, June 12th at 7 a.m.
Where: 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Fairmount Park.
This half marathon finds the happy place between oh-so-serious race and total fun run: You’ll find optional challenges placed throughout the race, costumes are encouraged, and live bands line the course. Oh! And the race ends with a beer garden courtesy of Sly Fox Brewing Company AND free massages from the lovely humans of Phila Massages. But don’t be fooled: Despite all that fun, there are still plenty of runners pounding the pavement for time.
9. SUP Fitness at Spruce Street Harbor Park begins!
When: Saturday, June 11th.
Where: Spruce Street Harbor Park, 121 North Columbus Boulevard, Delaware River Waterfront.
Starting June 11th, the ladies of Aqua Vida are bringing floating paddleboard sessions back to Spruce Street Harbor Park — and they’ve got plenty more than just yoga for you to choose from this time around. This year, they’ll be offering their floating boot camp classes, floating meditation and floating yoga. Say it with us: Yaaaasssssss.
10. Fest 108
When: Saturday, June 18th at 10 a.m.
Where: 4335 Skippack Pike, Schwenksville.
Not to be confused with Wanderlust 108, coming to Philly in October, Fest 108 is a daylong yoga fest being put on by MOYO at a — get this, Instagram-obsessed yogis of the world — rustic barn in Schwenksville. Expect classes from instructors like Yoga Home’s Maura Manzo (who will also be at Be Well Philly Boot Camp, by the way!), all types of vendors, from crafts to food, and plenty of music. As an added bonus, kids under 12 get free entry, complete with their very own kids’ tent.
