A Cool 30-Person Wedding at Fishtown’s Kensington Quarters

The couple stopped for a private cake-cutting at Cake Life before heading to the reception.

It’s no secret that Fishtown is a popular destination for local brides and grooms; we’ve showcased our fair share of weddings in the hip Philly neighborhood (like this one at Suraya, or this one at La Colombe). And now, we’re adding to our list: This intimate Vaux Studio Wedding Chapel ceremony and Kensington Quarters reception, photographed by Brittney Raine, is yet another example of how special a Big Day in Fishtown can be — even one as decidedly low key as this.

Natasha Lopez knew Lance Arrington was someone special when he caught her eye at work. Both, at the time, were employed by the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, but Natasha’s shyness — and the fact that they worked in different departments — kept her from pursuing him.

That all changed when Natasha’s best friend and fellow coworker, Jenn, approached Lance to let him know about Natasha’s interest. The conversation went well. “One day he just showed up on my floor and asked me out to lunch,” Natasha says. They got lunch the very next day — at McDonalds. “We’ve had lunch together every day ever since.”

Different than most couples, Natasha and Lance had no traditional proposal or engagement. “We always knew we would marry, so it was just about timing for us,” Natasha says. After four years together, the pair began planning their Big Day. The process took about a year.

On a rainy May day in Philadelphia, Natasha and Lance got married at Vaux Studio Wedding Chapel. Following the ceremony, the pair held a private cake-cutting at Cake Life Bake Shop before walking over to an intimate 30-person family-style dinner at Kensington Quarters. (The bride made an outfit change for the festivity.) Guests dined on charcuterie, caesar salad, mushroom toast, and their choice of beef, pork, duck or chicken roast before rounding out the meal with Funfetti cake also from Cake Life.

In lieu of a traditional first dance, the newlyweds created their own special moment: “We danced in the rain walking to meet our guests at our dinner spot.”
