The Best Thing That Happened This Week: Scrapple Fries!

Oh, Philly, how could this have taken so long?!?

So yeah duh yeah, our town’s gotten all fancy-schmancy with its James Beard Award-winning chefs and Brit pie buffets and 40- (40!) course dinners and secret hot chicken and so many new dining spots that we have to update our famous 50 Best list all the freaking time. But every once in a while, it’s good to go back to your roots. Which is why we stood up and did the Electric Slide when we heard the news that Shank’s Original Pier 40, the Columbus Boulevard breakfast shack, has invented* the food we really, truly longed for lo these many years but didn’t even know it: scrapple fries. Which are just what they sound like: thin sticks of lovely, organ-meaty you-know-what, deep-fried to a crisp and perfect for dipping in Rocky’s favorite condiment. Ahhhhhhhhhh …

*Update: After this story was published, a representative from Coffee Station in Morton, Delaware County, reached out with what he terms “all the proof you need” that the cafe was the inventor of scrapple fries — and with a pending trademark application to boot:
