Report: Rick Santorum Dropping Out of Presidential Race, Which He Was In

The former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania finished 11th in Iowa on Monday (even Chris Christie beat him). He’s dropping out and endorsing another candidate tonight.

James Buchanan will remain the only President of the United States from Pennsylvania after the 2016 election.

You know that, of course, but today it becomes official: CNN reports Rick Santorum is dropping out of the presidential race, citing two Republican sources.

Santorum was the second-place finisher in the 2012 GOP primaries, capturing 11 states. But despite winning Iowa that year — although political media at the time reported a Romney win — he finished 11th in the Iowa primary this time. He even lost to Chris Christie!

With 17 candidates this year, Santorum wasn’t able to get any traction despite being a former senator. He never competed in a main-stage debate. His talking points about “bombing [ISIS] back to the 7th century” were also used by candidates who polled better. He attempted to gain traction by talking about bringing back American manufacturing, but Donald Trump did that too.

CNN reports Santorum is expected to endorse a candidate when he announces he’s suspending his campaign today. He’ll be on Fox News tonight to make “two big announcements.”

Three candidates have dropped out since Iowa. Mike Huckabee, who finished ninth, dropped out Tuesday. Rand Paul, who finished fifth in Iowa, also quit the race today.
