East Passyunk is a community of neighborhood bars. The best spots tend to be populated by locals chatting amiably with their bartenders, picking up random conversations with the people next to them, and enjoying a drink after a day at the office. Bars here lean divey, but there are also a few places where you can get a good cocktail and some pretty stellar wine, especially along East Passyunk Avenue. Here’s where to go for drinks with friends, fancy cocktails for dinner, or for a special date night over a few glasses of wine.
For our purposes, we’re defining East Passyunk as everything between Washington Avenue and Snyder Avenue from Broad to 6th Street. We can quibble online about the exact boundaries of Philadelphia neighborhoods later.
Manatawny Still Works East Passyunk Tasting Room
East Passyunk is a popular drinking destination which is why Manatawny Still Works, Pottstown’s own craft distillery, opened up this tasting room. Here you can enjoy cocktails made from small-batch spirits, like a Sidecar made with their apple brandy, or a classic Sazerac featuring their four grain whiskey. 1603 East Passyunk Avenue.
Barcelona Wine Bar
There’s a reason the first page of the wine menu here is called the Table of Contents. It’s because they’ve got 20 pages of vintages hailing from select wine regions throughout Europe and the Americas. We’re talking Txakoli from Spain’s Basque region, sparkling rosé from the Canary Islands, and Argentinian pinot noir, to name a few. Enjoy from their robust selection of wines by the glass and by the bottle. Order some jamón and patatas bravas and you’ll swear you’re getting ready to bar hop around El Born. 1709 East Passyunk Avenue.
Nutmeg Bar and Market
Whether you’re sober, sober-curious, or just cutting back, the variety of non-alcoholic drinks at Nutmeg Bar and Market pack all of the flavor with none of the booze. Get a South Philly 75 made with grownup sparkling lemonade, pair it with some cured olives and Marcona almonds, and then grab some N/A wine and beer from the market to go. 1835 East Passyunk Avenue.
Le Virtù
We love Le Virtù for plates of Maccheroni alla mugnaia and beef braciole over heirloom polenta, but what people don’t realize about this special-occasion Abruzzese restaurant is that it’s a killer neighborhood bar. You don’t have to come here for a four-course meal. Just belly up to the bar and enjoy a glass of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo or a swig of amaro, but don’t skip the affettati misti made with a selection of house-cured meats, marinated vegetables, and pizza fritta. 1927 East Passyunk Avenue.
Pistolas Del Sur
You won’t find more bottles of tequila and mezcal anywhere else in East Passyunk than Pistolas Del Sur. In addition to a large menu of margaritas and tequila-forward cocktails, they have an impressive selection of tequilas and mezcals for you to try. Prices range from $7 all the way to $33 if you’re looking for a celebratory shot. 1934 East Passyunk Avenue.
Ember & Ash
Ember & Ash’s cocktail game is strong. Just like their food menu, the cocktails are inspired by the seasons and rotate on a regular basis, so there’s always something fun and festive to try. They’ve also got an impressive array of draft wines, and for those who do not partake, beautifully crafted zero-proof cocktails. 1520 East Passyunk Avenue.
The Pub on Passyunk East
The P.O.P.E. has long been a hangout for craft beer lovers. This is where you go to have a few rounds of beer, meet up with your friends, share some nachos, and catch up on Love Island during one of their watch parties. 1501 East Passyunk Avenue.
Human Robot Süd
You don’t have to schlep all the way up to Kensington to get a taste of Human Robot’s Czech pils or German lagers. This tasting room has all the Human Robot beer you crave on tap, as well as cans in the fridge to take home and enjoy later. 1646 South 12th Street.
Stateside
This spot has a pretty decent selection of whiskeys, but the real draw is how the large windows open up to create a wrap-around, indoor-outdoor bar. Just walk up to the window, take a seat, and order Dad’s Hat Manhattan and watch passersby milling about the avenue. 1536 East Passyunk Avenue.
Garage Passyunk
As the name suggests, this place feels like you’re hanging out in your buddy’s decked out garage. There’s beer, a pool table, ski ball, and tons of TVs so you can catch whatever game is on. 1231 East Passyunk Avenue.
Triangle Tavern
If you’re in the mood to hang out in an old-school sports bar that has better-than-average bar food, check out Triangle Tavern. The beer list is ample and the cocktails are solid, but where else are you going to watch the Eagles struggle over a plate of ridiculously good vegan meatballs? 1338 South 10th Street.
Bok Bar
Open seasonally from April to the end of October, Bok has arguably the best view in the city that you can take in while drinking a $5 can of beer. The drinks are your standard beers, hard seltzers, and wine, with a few cocktails thrown in for good measure. The truth is that you’re not going for the drinks, though. You’re going for the gorgeous view and the really fun pop-ups from some of the city’s best chefs. But the breeze you’ll get with your beer? It really can’t be beat. 800 Mifflin Street.
Mish Mish
You can count on Philly Mag’s former food editor Alex Tewfik to know a thing or two about excellent wine. Though Mish Mish is more of a sit-down restaurant where diners share plates of Armenian string cheese and Mediterranean-inspired dishes, they do invite walk-ins to their sidewalk tables for Sunshine Hour. Thursday through Monday, when the weather is nice, you can score happy hour prices on select wines, cocktails, beers, and snacks. Keep an eye on their Instagram for details. 1046 Tasker Street.
Watkins Drinkery
Watkins has been around for more than a decade, serving good cocktails and cold beer, as well as food that is significantly better than you’d think. On sunny days, there are a few outdoor tables where you’ll find regulars catching up over $4 High Life and baskets of fries. 1712 South 10th Street.
Laurel
Laurel was once a fancy, tasting menu-only restaurant, but today the bar is the place to be. The by-the-glass wine list ranges from full on champagne for $25 to an $11 glass of Italian cab franc. The cocktails are also excellent, leaning on local ingredients like Ploughman Cidery vermouth. Trust them to make a great classic cocktail, too. 1617 East Passyunk Avenue.
Fountain Porter
Fountain Porter is known for funky natural wines and $6 burgers. You should try both, but know that their beer selection is also great, and they’ll make you mean martini if you ask. 1601 South 10th Street.
The Jim
The Jim is Philly bar legend Fergie Carey‘s expansion into South Philly. He and his partners took the former Chinese restaurant and built in a big, horseshoe-shaped bar where you can drink the Pink Jawn, a nicely balanced gin cocktail with Campari and grapefruit. They also serve generally Asian food like bang bang shrimp, fried dumplings, and Korean fried chicken. 1701 South 8th Street.
Messina Social Club
Okay, you technically need a membership to drink at Messina, but you can get one by sending them an email. The drinks are strong and well-made, leaning Italian (think Campari and limoncello), but the staff is friendly and can make just about anything. As an added bonus, they’re open until 3 a.m. on the weekends. 1533 South 10th Street.
Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar
Ray’s is an institution: one of the city’s only smoking bars until the owner quit in 2020. Go for Friday night karaoke, cheap drafts, and general people watching near Pat’s and Geno’s. 1200 East Passyunk Avenue.
Solar Myth
Solar Myth took over the former Boot & Saddle space but left the iconic sign so you’ll never miss them. It’s a natural wine bar from the same people who run Fountain Porter, with the added benefit of a cutting-edge jazz bar in the city. 1131 South Broad Street.
Cartesian Brewery
Cartesian took a garage on Passyunk and turned it into a charming brewery with a sunny back patio and a small kitchen that is home to some of Philadelphia’s best pizza. They regularly host events like craft fairs and other pop-ups, but the beer and pizza are the stars. 1326 East Passyunk Avenue.
Cantina Los Caballitos
Cantina Los Caballitos is not the best Mexican food in the neighborhood, but it is the spot with the best happy hour deals on pitchers of margaritas — and the added benefit of being a location where you can get food after midnight. There’s also the patio, which offers some of the best people watching along the avenue. 1651 East Passyunk Avenue.
