South Philly’s New Medical Marijuana Dispensary Will Have Its Own Yoga and Meditation Studio

Plus, Herbology will host free "cooking with cannabis" classes for patients.

It feels like just yesterday that Philadelphia welcomed its first medical marijuana dispensary, Restore Integrative Wellness Center, to Fishtown. Now, we’re already planning for a second, Herbology, an Illinois-based medical marijuana dispensary with a location in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

While Herbology will serve as a medical marijuana dispensary where qualifying patients can access medicinal cannabis, it’ll also have an attached wellness center on the floor above it. According to Herbology director of marketing and outreach, Mahja Sulemanjee Bortocek, the center plans to partner with “local wellness providers” to offer yoga and meditation classes, as well as cannabis basics classes, cooking classes, and maybe even some laughter therapy. The programming, According to Bortocek, is dependent on what kinds of local talent they can find to teach the classes.

The yoga and meditation classes will be traditional — as in, no marijuana involved — but the cooking classes will teach the center’s patients how to cook with cannabis (ummm, hello, canna-chocolate-dipped strawberries). All classes will be available for free to patients, and the yoga and meditation classes will be made available to the general public, for a small fee.

Herbology is set to open in August in South Philly at 125-27 East Passyunk Avenue. Once the dispensary is open, Bortocek says it typically takes about six months for them to get the programming and classes up and running. In the meantime, we’ll keep an eye on Herbology’s social media for updates on the new location.
