Main Line Monday: Ornate, Extravagant Monk Road Estate

This enormous home is spectacular, in every sense of the word.

If the $24.5 million price tag for Linden Hill at 1543 Monk Road is just a tad above your price range, fret not. Berkshire Hathaway is listing another house on the same street. This one’s at 1410 Monk Road, a mere 285 feet from the estate formerly owned by Campbell Soup mogul Jack Dorrance.

The eight-bedroom home on two acres is a sprawling 14,500 square feet with nine full baths and three powder rooms. Downstairs (please don’t call it the basement) you’ll find a bar, a billiard room, a family room, cardio and weight rooms, and a home theater.

The house also has an elevator — and a philosophy. According to the listing, “From the electronic controlled gated entranceway, to the landscaping, terraces, pool and spa, 1410 Monk Rd. reflects a philosophy that a spectacular residence must satisfy its owner from every vantage point.” The interior — from the wallpaper and inlaid wood floor to the lighting fixtures — is certainly spectacular, in every sense of the word.

At $5.9 million this could be a very good deal, or else the owners who paid $7.774 million in November 2012 got a little carried away. Listing agent Robin Gordon said that the current owners paid about $700,000 for an adjacent two acre lot, which is also for sale now.
