We talk about wedding budgets a lot, and for good reason: Deciding how much money you’re going to spend on your Big Day is the very first step in planning the whole thing—plus, it’s a huge investment, and one you don’t want to take lightly.

The great news, though, is that there are tons of couples who have walked this road (well, aisle) before you, and there are plenty of budgeting do’s and don’ts you can take away from their planning experiences. Their first-hand, recently learned lessons often make for the best advice.

Here, HuffPo gathered what-I-learned tidbits from 11 real brides dish on their biggest money mistakes and what they wish they had done differently. From committing to the first photographer you speak to (shop around first!) and booking a venue that’s too expensive to forgetting to price out alterations (they’re not cheap!), these common missteps can really mess with your budget.

We suggest you jot down a few notes to avoid making the same mistakes (trust us, you’ll be glad you did).
