The Best Thing That Happened This Week

This is the best thing that happened this week.

It’s been 35 years since Pope John Paul II touched down in Philly aboard Shepherd One, tooled around in the Popemobile, and celebrated Mass for a million people on the Parkway. Mayor Frank Rizzo knelt and kissed his ring; His Holiness spurned a limo ride from the Cathedral Basilica and instead walked through the gathered faithful to the stage. Okay; it’s a little weird that a guy without a family will be guest of honor at the World Meeting of Families. But Francis seems like a good Papa. Besides, we were around for that last visit, and even for nonbelievers, we have to admit, for once, this really felt like the City of Brotherly Love.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t hear about Philly Jesus’s arrest.
