Is MMA the “Child Porn” of Sports?
South Dakota lawmaker Steve Hickey wants to ban mixed martial arts fighting in his state, calling MMA cage fighting “the child porn of sports.”
“Decent and civil societies have to draw the line somewhere … with smoking we draw the line after tobacco and before pot; with ‘adult entertainment’ we draw the line at child porn,” Hickey recently wrote on his blog. “Where do we draw the line with violent entertainment? I suggest we draw the line at cage fighting.”
(He added) “MMA Cage Fighting is the child porn of sports.”
Well, not quite. By law, children are too young to give their consent to just about anything, much less anything of a sexual nature. Yes MMA hits can be big and harmful, but at the end of the day it does involve two (or more) consenting adults. Nobody’s being forced to do anything. And what else are you going to do in South Dakota?
