Al Fresco Summer Dining in Philadelphia

From sushi in Center City to pancake brunch in South Philly, these are the best places to eat al fresco this summer.

It’s a beautiful day in the Gayborhood. There’s not an empty seat on Knock’s sidewalk, and Valanni’s al fresco scene is one sparkling pear martini shy of going fruited-cocktail supernova. Fear not. At last count there are some 273 sidewalk cafes in Center City alone—up from zero in 1995—and that’s not even counting the off-street courtyards, roof decks and half-secret patios that are the real pride of outdoor dining and drinking in Philly. Nothing against breaking flatbread among friends, but the life of the tongue is richer come summer outside the culinary closet.
