PBGP Honors Patrick Murphy

Plus: We have the complete round up of events starting April 22

Philadelphia Black Gay Pride (PBGP) kicks off April 22 with a full week of events. This year, the organizers will honor Patrick Murphy with the first-ever “LGBT Friendly Politician of  the Year Award.” The former congressmen and veteran is credited with helping to push the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal, allowing for LGBT members of the armed forces to serve openly and honestly. He’s also currently running for Attorney General of Pennsylvania as a Democrat from Bucks County.

“I think it goes without saying that Congressman Murphy’s dedication to our community was instrumental in the repeal of DADT,” says Chris Alston, PBGP President. “His level of commitment made him the clear choice in what we hope will become one of our signature annual presentations.”

Former Congressman Murphy will accept the award on April 27 (7:30 p.m.) at the Crowne Plaza on City Avenue during PBGP’s opening reception and family reunion.

“I am honored to receive this award from an organization that is  working so hard to further equality and ensure justice for all  Philadelphians,” says Murphy. “As a Congressman, I worked  with groups like this one to repeal the discriminatory ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t  Tell’ policy. When I’m attorney general, I will work with you to extend equality to all Pennsylvanians, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.”
