The Liberty Bears strip down for charity

Why hibernate when you can help the Liberty Bears raise money for their community fund? In the past, money from the fund has been donated to Calcutta House and Camp Brightfeathers. Next month, the Valentine Boxers Ball (Feb. 4) gets started at 9 p.m. at the “Top of the Stop.”

“Club has recently ‘re-emerged’ from ‘hibearnation,'” says Thom Caggiano, president of the Liberty Bears of Philadelphia, “and what better way (especially after our successful coat drive) than with a party?”

The bears host several fundraisers throughout the year and recently collected coats for the community during a pre-winter drive. They’ve also hosted specialty nights and art auctions.

For the Boxer Ball, it’s all about the season of love. “DJ Barney Medunic is providing the music,” says Caggiano. “There will be a Sexy Bear and Sexy Boy contest at midnight, along with a few other surprises.”

Unlike a lot of black-tie balls, the dress code for this one is strictly about baring it. Think: boxers, briefs, jocks and street clothes. “It’s up to our guests,” says Caggiano. “Dare to be a bear.”
