Travel: Quick Weekend Getaways: York, PA
Overall vibe: Celebrate what’s left of American manufacturing, in a small-town setting.
What to do/see: York brags that it’s the “Factory Tour Capital of the World.” Visitors can get up close to the production of brand-name motorcycles (Harley-Davidson), mahogany tables (Madison Square Furniture), potato chips (Utz), pretzels (Snyder’s), and more potato chips (Martin’s). For a different taste of the past, there’s also plenty of antiquing around the county: On May 7th, the York Expo Center kicks off three antiques shows. For factory tour information and antiques show specials, visit yorkpa.org.
Where to eat: The Commonwealth restaurant at the Yorktowne Hotel (48 East Market Street, York; 800-233-9324) mixes classic-rustic American with new-style preparation (the bison sirloin comes with chestnut/juniper berry compote and blueberry shiraz jus) and has a wine list that’s been called out by Wine Spectator.
Where to stay: The Bechtel Victorian Mansion Bed & Breakfast has poster beds and enthusiastically patterned floral wallpaper, plus fruit cobbler in the morning (400 West King Street, East Berlin, 717-259-7760; rooms from $100).
