“I’m New at This” is Be Well Philly’s series for new and soon-to-be parents. Tips featured in “I’m New at This” are recommendations, and we believe in pursuing methods and approaches that work best for your unique family. Have a question you’d like to see answered? The pelvic floor is one of the most important, but least talked about parts of the body. It’s the group of muscles, ligaments and connective tissue that holds all the pelvic organs — the bladder, vagina, cervix, uterus, urethra, rectum and prostate — in place, and whether you know it or not, you use it every day.

Though pelvic care is often classified under “women’s health,” it’s important to remember that every person has a pelvic floor, and therefore, all individuals — regardless of biological sex — can experience issues like pain during sex, bathroom-related difficulties, or pain around the pelvis, hips, groin, or lower back. These conditions are common, but not normal, and treatment should be sought so you can live a pain-free life.

Women are more likely to encounter dysfunction, though, whether or not they ever become pregnant (thanks, human biology). And a postpartum pelvic floor is especially susceptible — it bears the weight of the growing baby during pregnancy and stretches up to three times its original length during labor, which can result in muscle weakening and other complications. What’s really unfortunate is that, unlike other parts of the world like France and the UK, pelvic-floor rehabilitation is not standard post-delivery medical care in the United States — meaning many new moms are often left living with untreated issues.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of where you can find pelvic-floor care in and around Philadelphia. Below, our ultimate guide to local pelvic-floor specialists.

(Ed. Note: Big-name health systems and hospitals throughout the region treat pelvic-floor issues at their rehab or outpatient centers, or within dedicated units: Doylestown Health, Ivy Rehab Network, Jefferson Health, Main Line Health, NovaCare Rehabilitation, Penn Medicine, St. Luke’s, Temple Health, Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, Virtua Health.)
