The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Philly: Vegan Delivery

These standouts are sure to pair nicely with a Netflix marathon.

*Welcome to our occasional feature, The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Philly. We’re on a mission to find the most delicious, indulgent restaurant dishes for every kind of dieter—whether you’re gluten-free, vegan, raw and more. We’re all about occasional splurges, and that’s what this series is all about. We’ll talk to foodies to find out their favorite eats, but feel free to add yours in the comments. Bon appétit!

Ahhhhhh, delivery. The ultimate savior on nights when you straight up don’t have time to cook, let alone go to the store to get items to cook — or for when you just want to curl up on the couch with your love (your dog, duh) and watch movies, unbothered by annoying tasks like cleaning dishes. And — I don’t think I’m alone in feeling this way — doesn’t delivery just taste better than food untainted with the taste of your own effort?

One of the cool things about living in Philly is that delivery here is much more than just pizza. And with services like Caviar and GrubHub, we can get food from basically any restaurant in the city (and the suburbs) delivered right to our door. The side garden salad — “no cheese or croutons, with oil and vinegar instead of ranch, please!” — vegan delivery destiny is no more. Nowadays, I have to fight the urge to get Dizengoff delivered on the reg.

Now, you may even need help narrowing your vegan delivery options. That’s where this post comes in: We asked five Philly vegan foodies to spill on the best vegan delivery food they’ve ever had in Philly. Check out the list below for vegan delivery dishes (including a bangin’ breakfast sandwich!) that definitely won’t disappoint.

Best thing I ever ate: 3 Kinds of Mushroom Soup, Sesame Tofu and Veg Heaven at Su Xing House

“My favorite delivery spot is Su Xing House, which happens to be a fellow lady-owned business. My order is typically their 3 Kinds of Mushroom Soup (So. Many. Textures. So. Many. Mushrooms!) along with a tofu dish, which usually ends up being their Sesame Tofu, which is both decadent and chewy, and the Veg Heaven, which is tofu and eggplant in garlic sauce with green beans and a little citrus action. Both come with rice (#leftovers). And, they recently started delivering through GrubHub (yay!), and are also now open on Sundays (double yay!).”

Best thing I ever ate: the Vegan Beef Burrito from Cantina Dos Segundos

“Burritos are my favorite food, so naturally I have tried every vegan version in the city. The best, hands down, is the vegan beef burrito (with guacamole!) from Cantina Dos Segundos in Northern Liberties. They do a great job of getting every flavor in every bite, and the burritos are always wrapped and sealed perfectly. When I lived over there, I’d always get one to go and watch the Phillies play in the Piazza with my dog. Now that I live in Center City, I have one delivered whenever I’m craving the spring baseball nostalgia (or a perfect burrito).”

Best thing I ever ate: Breakfast Sandwich and Maple Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich at HipCityVeg (Broad Street location)

“HipCityVeg has become a Philly vegan staple. The rollout of their new breakfast menu has definitely brought some new flavors. I usually go for the holy union, a sweet and savory breakfast combination of the classic HipCity Breakfast Sandwich and the Maple P.B. and Banana Sandwich. That texas toast the Maple Peanut Butter and Banana sandwich is served on is the truth.”

Best thing I ever ate: Indonesian Rolls from Mi Lah Vegetarian

“Most of the food I eat and cook at home is super health-conscious, but I love to indulge every now and then. And let me say, when I do, I go hard! These rolls are absolute deep-fried deliciousness! Crispy outside, loaded with tender, flavorful veggies and seitan on the inside. They are served with a fresh basil-avocado sauce that it super tasty, but I find that the rolls are perfect on their own, so I usually forgo the sauce.”

Steve Laurence of Vegan Commissary
Best thing I ever ate: Lemongrass Tofu Hoagie at QT Vietnamese Sandwiches

“I never order delivery. It’s way too expensive, especially considering that the delivery services take 30 percent of the total sale away from the restaurants! Instead, I prefer to pick up myself and give my money directly to the people who are producing my food.

“The best thing about eating vegan in Philly is the large number of non-vegan spots that have really delicious vegan food. My favorite is QT Vietnamese Sandwiches in Chinatown. The women who own the shop are terrific cooks and lovely, hospitable people. I love their Lemongrass Tofu Hoagie. It has a crisp and crusty roll, crunchy pickled veggies, and warm marinated tofu. I always eat the first half in the car.” Editor’s note: For the lazy or carless, do know: this vegan-friendly spot delivers via GrubHub.
