Philadelphia International Airport Ranked 3rd Healthiest in the Country

Surprised?

Well, here’s some good news for your holiday traveling season: Philadelphia International Airport was just named the third healthiest airport in the country by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, based on its healthy food options. (If you’re wondering what the heck those options are, I’ll get to that in a minute.) This is a huge jump up from last year’s ranking, where Philly came in at 11th place on the list.

To give you the rundown of how the airports are ranked: The ranking is based on a study of over 24 airports around the country; Registered dietitians study the menus of the eateries at all the airports, then they rank the airports based on the availability of stuff like cholesterol-free, plant-based and fiber-packed meals. In studying the airports’ offerings, the dietitians found that a whopping 82 percent of the eateries at Philadelphia International Airport offered meals that they deemed healthy, putting us at third place.

But wait, before you get too, too excited about the prospect of stumbling upon a Sweetgreen the next time you’re lugging your carry-on across the airport, I think it’s important to manage your expectations: At Philadelphia International Airport, the Committee highlights healthier options like Chipotle (sans a smothering of sour cream, we’d guess), the veggie sub at Philly Steak & Gyros, Currito Burrito, and more. So I’m going to go ahead and say it probably isn’t a heaven-on-earth kind of destination for healthy eaters quite yet — but it is better than others when it comes to making healthy eating easy.

Other airports that top the list are Los Angeles International Airport in first place, Newark Liberty International Airport, which came in second, and San Francisco International Airport, which tied with us for third place. You can see the full list here.
