Pre-Feast Downward Dogs: Where to Do Yoga on Thanksgiving Day
Before you hunker down at the Thanksgiving dinner table and gorge yourself with enough turkey and pie to feed a small village, we suggest you get your sweat on—you know, to make room. We’ve tracked down a slew of yoga studios around Philly that will be hosting Thanksgiving Day classes, from donation-based classes, to bird-themed classes (seriously) to plain ol’ vinyasa classes, and more. So read up, pick a class and sign up to get your sweat on before the big Thanksgiving feast.
IN THE CITY
Amrita Yoga
Where: 1204 Frankford Avenue, Fishtown.
When: 9:30 a.m.
This Fishtown studio—named Best Yoga Studio in Philly by us this year—is hosting a 90-minute all-levels flow class that’s sure to get you sweating. The cost to drop in is $15.
Bikram Yoga Philadelphia
Where: 1520 Sansom Street, Rittenhouse.
When: 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
This Rittenhouse Bikram studio will be hosting two classes on Thanksgiving day, one at 9 a.m. and one at 11 a.m. The cost to drop in is $20.
Blue Banyan Yoga
Where: 7153 Sprague Street, Mt. Airy.
When: 8 a.m.
This 90-minute class, appropriately named the Karma Class, is an all-levels pay-what-you-want practice, with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders.
Dhyana Yoga Center City
Where: 1611 Walnut Street, Rittenhouse.
When: 1 p.m.
This two-hour-long vinyasa class will be entirely devoted to bird poses, like Peacock pose, Eagle pose, Heron pose, and more. See what they did there? Drop ins are $15.
DIG Yoga
Where: 410 Monroe Street, Queen Village.
When: 10:30 a.m.
You will so deserve a giant piece of pumpkin pie after this two-hour long mixed-levels class, taught by Mariel Freeman. Drop ins are $17.
Grace and Glory Yoga
Where: 100 West Oxford Street, South Kensington.
When: 9:30 a.m.
Here, you will find a heated 90-minute music-flow yoga class. Doesn’t that just sound like the loveliest way to start your day? The class is donation-based, and all proceeds go to Philabundance.
Maha Yoga
Where: 1700 Sansom Street, Rittenhouse.
When: 10 a.m.
This all-levels vinyasa class is open to beginners and experienced yogis alike. The cost is $15, cash only.
Mother Heart Studio
Where: 530 East Girard Avenue, Fishtown.
When: 9:30 a.m.
Proceeds from this Fishtown studio’s donation-based Thanksgiving class go to Haiti.
Practice Yoga Studio
Where: 804 South 4th Street, Queen Village.
When: 10 a.m.
Get your downward dog on for Philabundance at this all-levels donation-based class.
Priya Hot Yoga
Where: 1828 Callowhill Street, Fairmount.
When: 9:30 a.m.
All proceeds from this donation-based hot yoga class, taught by Keli Engleson, will go to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. All levels are welcome—just show up ready to sweat.
Studio 34
Where: 4522 Baltimore Avenue, West Philly.
When: 8 a.m.
This all-levels donation-based class, benefitting indigenous-led environmental organizations, will integrate stories and poses inspired by nature and the people who work to protect it. Interesting, right?
Wake Up Yoga
Where: 1839 Passyunk Avenue, South Philly.
When: 9:30 a.m.
This vigorous flow class will be sweaty, fast-moving, and might incorporate complex poses. In other words, it probably won’t be too beginner-friendly—but it will be a great pre-Thanksgiving workout. The cost in $15, and there is no pre-registration.
Wake Up Yoga
Where: 2329 Parrish Street, Fairmount.
When: 9:30 a.m.
This energizing flow class will be a little less sweaty and fast-paced than the studio’s South Philly class, and more accessible to beginners. There’s no pre-registration, and the cost is $7.
Yoga Garden
Where: 903 South Street, Bella Vista.
When: 10 a.m.
Squeeze in an all-levels flow session at this South Street studio for 15 bucks on Thanksgiving morning.
IN THE SUBURBS AND NEW JERSEY
Bikram Yoga Main Line
Where: 511 Old Lancaster Avenue, Berwyn.
When: 7 a.m.
Get your sweat session out of the way early at this 7 a.m. Bikram class. Drop ins are $15.
DIG Yoga
Where: 204 North Union Street, Lambertville.
When: 9:15 a.m.
All levels of yogis are welcome to this 90-minute class. The cost to drop in is $17.
Maha Yoga
Where: 66 Rittenhouse Place, Ardmore.
When: 10 a.m.
Newbies and seasoned yogis alike are welcome to this 90-minute vinyasa class. Drop ins are $15, cash only.
Power Yoga Works
Where: 81 Lancaster Avenue, Malvern.
When: 9 a.m.
This 90-minute heated power yoga class, taught by Power Yoga Works founder Bill Raup, is designed to tone and detoxify. Drops ins are $12.
Yoga Garden
Where: 131 North Narberth Avenue, Narberth.
When: 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
This studio will be hosting a slew of classes on Thanksgiving morning. They’ll have all-levels flow classes at 6 and 9 a.m., and an intermediate flow class at 9, as well. The cost for each class is $15.
Yoga Home
Where: 424 East Elm Street, Conshohocken.
When: 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
Here, you have your choice of vinyasa or slow flow on Thanksgiving morning. The vinyasa class kicks off at 9:30 a.m. and the slow flow class begins an hour later. The cost for each class is $15.
