Weekend Roundup: Philly Beer Week Kicks Off With ‘Broads, Brews, and Queens’
FRIDAY SPOTLIGHT:
Creamium, sex-positive orgs Pleasure Rush! and ScrewSmart‘s follow-up event to May’s Masturbate-a-Thon, redefines all of those family-friendly memories you had with Cranium back in the day. “People get to participate in answering all of these fun and silly questions regarding sex and, of course, masturbation,” says Elicia Gonzalez, executive director of GALAEI. The game show, hosted by Notorious OMG as well as drag king Lappa Vagic, is meant to “reduce the stigma and shame around sexuality” — and provide a few pink-cheeked chuckles in the process, I’m sure. And if you’re not into all that, go to play for what Gonzalez promises are some solid prizes. Show up for the silly sex dialogue, stay for the dance party and free giveaways. 9 p.m.-1 a.m., $5-$10, The RUBA, 414 Green St.
ALSO HAPPENING FRIDAY:
- For all of you artsy-fartsy peeps, Art After Five will take place tonight at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, featuring a lineup put together by bassist Lee Smith, as well as a slew of cabaret and jazz performances to ease your way into the weekend.
- Catch the screening of “Portrait of Jason,” a Jason Holliday tell-all of what life was like facing the double-whammy of being both black and gay in the conservative 1960s.
- Voyeur’s got a kooky vaudeville show happening, featuring Raquel Reed, Ann Artist, and “The Misfits.” (This one’s an all-ages event, for all of you young’uns out there.)
- We’re not sure what the makeup of this NSFW party will be, but its Boy Scouts-inspired “Scout’s Honor” title and outside-of-the-Gayborhood venue adds some intrigue — check it out in Old City’s Khyber Pass Pub.
SATURDAY SPOTLIGHT:
It comes but once a year, folks! While Philly Beer Week technically starts today, you’ll more likely want to save your peak beer buzz for Saturday night’s female-fab oriented “Broads, Brews, and Queens” drag show at Smokin’ Betty’s. Entertainment for the night will be hosted by the super-sassy, wag-her-finger-in-your-face Goddess Isis, with performances by Omyra Lynn, Porcelain, Lady Poison, Satine Harlow, Brooklyn Ford — nearly every Philly drag queen you’d care to see, all booked for one event. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet the “broads” behind the night’s draft specials, for anyone looking to take a crash course in Beer 101. Ticket sales will benefit William Way Community Center. 9 p.m.-12 a.m., Free (donations suggested), Smokin’ Betty’s, 116 S. 11th St.
ALSO HAPPENING SATURDAY:
- You know times are a-changin’ when an event promises to be an “alternative” to online dating. Either way, all of you Philly gay singles can throw on your tight jeans and stick-to-my-body t-shirts and strut your stuff to this weekend’s Continental Midtown singles mixer. (You’ll need a Meetup account to sign up.)
- Vixens and Vagabonds Queer and Kinky Cabaret: Hitched or Ditched! (what a mouthful, huh?) will throw a big gay dance party at Tabu in celebration of “marriage month,” with performances by Liberty City Kings and Mr. Gay Pride Philly 2013 Timmy Tenderloin — among others. And if you happen to miss Notorious OMG at Friday’s Creamium, then no worries — she’ll be in the ‘hood to host this event, too.
- Good vibes: Anna Crusis’ upbeat women’s-choir concert aims to lock the negativity in the closet and throw away the key with its “Good Happens!” concert at First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia.
- HELLO! No, we’re not saying hello — that’s the actual title of this Voyeur-hosted Colette and Miss Honey Dijon Saturday-night bash. Buy tickets in advance for this one.
- Rack up some good karma points with “Stimulus Gives Back: Cradles to Crayons,” which aims to supply shoes, toys, clothing, and more to underprivileged children in the Philadelphia region. Be sure to send an email if you plan on lending a hand at Stimulus’ volunteer event this Saturday afternoon.
