8 Coats to Buy Right Now
I have an obsession with coats, all shapes and sizes and styles. There are my leather biker jackets, one bedecked with studs, my vintage fur capes, my vintage tapestry coats, a cropped trench and a gold sequined evening jacket I keep hanging on a rolling rack in my office because it makes me happy. And why shouldn’t it? Coats are easy ways to transform an outfit, and to take some fashion risks (because, in the end, you can always take it off).
This season’s crop of toppers is delicious: Gold-foil coats with toggles! Leather capes! Double-breasted military jackets! And, thanks to high street shops, all trends are shoppable in every price point. Here are eight key coat trends for fall/winter, and my favorite buys for each. Choose your favorite – and one that fills a hole in your closet – and have fun bundling up.
A military-style coat. Lapel collar. Sharp shoulders. Brass buttons. Perfection. $249 at Zara, Rittenhouse.
A cape. Go classic with a wool one, or go total badass with a leather one. (I vote for the latter!) RtA leather cape, $1,195 at Joan Shepp, Rittenhouse.
A parka. Preferably one in olive green, with faux fur details. Smythe parka, $758 at Third Street Habit, Old City.
A denim jacket. But an updated one: My favorite find is this black denim one by ThePerfext, which is trimmed with long leather fringe. $495 at Ella’s Grove, Haverford.
A shaggy shearling. It’s all about the exaggerated texture here, and Stella McCartney’s (faux!) version captures it perfectly. $2,445 at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bala Cynwyd.
A statement coat. I’m mostly putting this on here because I am dying for it. DYING. Lanvin metallic-foil hooded coat, $2,885 at Neiman Marcus.
A vest. Layer it atop a thin sweater now, and over a leather jacket when temps drop. Plenty by Tracey Reese Naka vest, $298 at Anthropologie.
A cocoon coat. Cristobal’s signature gets a modern makeover with moto detailing and a dreamy pastel option. $298 at Banana Republic.
