Caroline Rollins Ouwerkerk and Kevin Michael Tirella’s paths first crossed at the University of Chicago, when Caroline, a freshman, was moving into her dorm. Kevin, a sophomore, was helping with orientation, and the pair would encounter each other on move-in day and then again during an orientation-week tour of Chicago.

It took a year for Caroline and Kevin’s relationship to become romantic. For their first date, they walked along Lake Michigan, taking in the view of downtown Chicago, before heading to a restaurant for dinner.

A decade — and three cross-country moves — later, in October 2016, Caroline and Kevin got engaged. What began as a four-mile hike in Baltimore ended with Kevin popping the question. A sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring inspired by Caroline’s mother’s own ring was the cherry on top of the proposal.

On June 9, 2018, the couple wed at Welkinweir in front of 75 of their loved ones. Memorable details included cardboard cutouts of their cats, Caroline’s blue-and-white-patterned wedding sneakers, and the reading of a diary entry written by Caroline the day she met Kevin.

The outdoor wedding was a bright, hot pink fiesta filled with popular Spanish and Mexican dishes and drinks — tacos, guacamole, patatas bravas, margaritas, and more. The festive day is described by the bride as one filled with “good music, good food, and great people.”
