Ivy Kaplin had dreamed of owning her own store since such a young age that the theme of her Bat Mitzvah was “Ivy’s Unique Boutique.” After growing up in the Philly area and studying business in college, Ivy went on to New York to work in fashion and gain the experience she’d need to open her own shop. Once she felt she had it, she returned to her hometown and prepared to do just that.

At the time that she was pondering exactly what type of boutique she’d open, a friend of Ivy’s was working in bridal and loved it. A bit of research later, she found herself chatting with the folks at Lovely Bride in New York, who were known for selling more modern and indie bridal gowns, and it just felt like the perfect fit. (Lovely also just so happened to be in the early stages of franchising; there are other locations now in LA, San Francisco, Rochester and DC.) “I loved the combination of having a clothing store and being able to really work one-on-one with clients in more personal way,” she says. “I opened Lovely Bride Philly in August of 2013 and it was the best decision I ever made.”

This week, we caught up with the wedding gown maven to find out what she’s into as we look forward to spring.

Favorite gown trend right now I love the sleek, modern, sophisticated look we are seeing right now. Lace has been on trend for a while now—it is gorgeous!—but it’s been nice to see some more designers working with stunning crepe fabrics and beautifully tailored silhouettes. A less is more approach. One of my favorite examples of this is Theia’s Daria gown. Complete elegance.

Favorite fashion icon Queen Bey! Maybe it’s just because I would kill for those long legs, or because she just wore a wedding gown to the Grammy’s. But really, I always love a girl who loves her sparkle.

Favorite part about your location in Old City I absolutely love Old City! It is a great business district. I love being surrounded by other small business owners who are always willing to help each other out. It’s also great that there are so many stylish boutiques my brides can stop by on their bridal shopping day.

Favorite bridal designer right now Carol Hannah. She has a way of making wedding gowns feel unexpected, whether it is the texture of the fabric or the way it drapes, each piece just feels like a work of art.

Favorite piece of advice to give brides shopping for their wedding gown It may seem like a silly one, but it is very important … Wear nude underwear when you try on gowns! While I love my fun colored-print undies as much as the next person, they will show through many white gowns, and it is often distracting when you’re trying to really see how the dress looks on you.
