Similar Approach, Different Results For Defense

0V3J8893Defensive coordinator Billy Davis said that his game plan for the Panthers was “pretty much the same” one that he put together for the Patriots the week before. Same techniques, same principles, same basic calls. It was just the results that were different.

A unit that surrendered 248 rushing yards (8.0 average) to the Patriots in the preseason opener limited Carolina to just 74 rushing yards on 25 attempts (3.0 average) Thursday night. The first unit yielded just a pair of field goals in the Eagles’ 14-9 win.

“It was so new, the scheme was so new,” said Davis of the first preseason game. “Everybody wanted to do well so bad. I think we pressed a little bit. Tonight felt a lot more relaxed, guys just taking care of their job more than anything.”

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Cowboys Could Have Had McCoy

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy.In six career games against the Dallas Cowboys, LeSean McCoy has averaged 5.7 yards per carry and reached the end zone four times.

But according to a former scout, McCoy could very easily have a star on his helmet right now.

Dallas had the 51st pick (second round) in the 2009 draft, but running back wasn’t a glaring need. They had three tailbacks (all under 25) on their roster in Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. So when it came time to pick, even though the Cowboys had McCoy atop their board, they decided to trade down.

A Note On Commenting

We are now nearly seven months into this whole Birds 24/7 experiment, and well, things are going great.

You stuck with us through training camp, the ups-and-downs (OK, mostly downs) of a 4-12 season, a coaching change and now what promises to be a busy offseason. We’ll be at the combine, the owners’ meetings and will also have free agency (March 12) covered.

As the site grows, we’re attracting more readers, and many of you are stopping by multiple times a day to see what’s happening, or to discuss the latest news in our comments section. We encourage that.

But we want to make sure that the discussion is thoughtful and respectful. That means no name-calling, personal attacks or individuals trying to dominate the conversation.

Coaching Buzz: Getting To Know Mike McCoy

On last night’s Birds 24/7 Radio show (podcast links here!), Tim and I discussed several potential candidates to replace Andy Reid as the Eagles’ next head coach.

One name we both agreed is worth keeping an eye on is Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.

Vick: ‘I Want To Get A Win For Coach Reid’

The first time Michael Vick was named the Eagles starter, he got a call from Andy Reid while on stage at a Philadelphia-area charity event.

That was back in September of 2010, as Vick took advantage of an injury to Kevin Kolb and set off on an unexpected, remarkable stretch of football that convinced the Eagles that they had a new franchise quarterback.

Fast-forward to Christmas Eve, 2012, the day of another Vick charity function – this one in Newport News, Virginia. Vick got another call from Reid, who asked him to be his starting quarterback one last time.

“I said if there is ever a time you need me I’ll be right there,” said Vick in a phone conversation with Birds 24/7. “I thought I played my last game for the season but things can always go the other way in the game of football.”

Coaching Buzz: Kelly, Banner And More

In case you missed it, we’ve started a special Coaching Buzz section here at Birds 24/7.

You’ll find everything we write about Andy Reid’s expected departure and Jeffrey Lurie’s coaching search right there. That includes links, rumors and notes on potential candidates.

Yesterday, we shared some information on Oregon’s Chip Kelly. There’s an interesting debate among some very smart football people about whether he’ll be successful in the NFL.

Coaching Buzz: Gruden, Kelly And Arians

A lot of talk among Eagles fans right now is focused not on the team’s Week 10 game against the Cowboys, but rather who the next head coach could potentially be.

While we need to acknowledge that there are still eight games remaining, and that Andy Reid is under contract through 2013, it’d be foolish to ignore the buzz about head-coaching candidates that is already building.

Birds 24/7 is, after all, a blog for the people.

So from time to time, we’ll round up links and information about names you should know.

Without further ado…
