It’s amazing how much the conversation can change in the NFL on a week-to-week basis.

Last Thursday, the discussion focused on whether Chip Kelly’s system would work at the professional level. But now, there’s a whole new set of topics, including this one: How should Kelly go about protecting leads?

That’s what happens, I suppose, when you build a 26-7 halftime lead on national television, but end up needing to recover an onside kick to clinch a victory in the final minutes.

Vinny Curry grew up an Eagles fan, so in a lot of respects this is a dream job for him. But his time in Philadelphia has come with its share of frustrations. And as he embarks on his second season, it’s unclear exactly how he fits into the team’s plans — if he fits into them at all.

The Neptune, New Jersey native found himself in a familiar spot Monday night:  on the inactive list. He did not dress for the first 10 games his rookie season. Curry was hoping those days were behind him, but was relegated to the sidelines once again on Monday night while the other six defensive linemen on the roster were active and saw playing time against Washington.

There is some talk that he is simply not a fit for this scheme and is best suited as a pass rusher in a 4-3.

Is it time to move on?

His representation is open the idea.

“Vinny’s main objective is to play and play at a high level,” agent Kevin Connor told Birds 24/7. “The question becomes, can that happen in Philly or do we need to facilitate an opportunity outside of Philly if it makes sense for all parties.”

When Chip Kelly introduced James Casey back in March, he described the tight end as “a new toy” who could line up in various spots in his offense.

He didn’t use the same terminology when the Eagles signed outside linebacker Connor Barwin, but really, that’s what Kelly was giving Billy Davis on the defensive side of the ball.

Much of the talk around Barwin has been about how his sack total dropped from 11.5 in 2011 to just 3.0 in 2012. But the truth is Barwin’s versatility is what the Eagles found most attractive when they brought him on board. Moving from a Wide-9 4-3 to a 3-4, they needed an outside linebacker equipped to handle a number of different responsibilities. And that’s what they got in Barwin.

Already this preseason, the 26-year-old is being used in a variety of ways. And against Jacksonville, he showed some play-making chops with an interception and a sack in the first half.

“I saw it out of the corner of my eye,” said Vick following Saturday’s practice. “I saw him fall. And usually when a guy falls like that, it’s something to be worried about. But hopefully everything will work out.”
