Wherever we go, whatever we do, we’re gonna go through it together.

That’s the word on the street when it comes to Lady Gaga possibly playing the famous burlesque star Louise, better known as Gypsy Rose Lee, in the upcoming Barbra Streisand remake of the popular musical Gypsy. And we’re loving the idea.

Several reports are indicating that Mother Monster is being eyed up by Streisand herself to play the part in the iconic musical by Jule Styne, Arthur Laurents, and Stephen Sondheim. John Travolta has also been in talks to play Herbie, Mama Rose’s love interest who finally gets fed up from being walked on by Rose…and walks out.

If Gaga lands the part (which, um, she’d be perfect in), she’d get a chance to belt out her own rendition of “Let Me Entertain You,” a theme used throughout the show that comes to a feverish climax at the end of act two when Louise transforms from wallflower to a powerful burlesque diva. The most iconic Gypsy Rose Lee (thus far) would arguably be Natalie Wood in the 1962 movie:

Of course, Gypsy is the stuff of Broadway legends: Popular divas who have taken on Mama Rose over the years include Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, Imelda Staunton, and Bette Midler in a made-for-TV movie version.
