Snow Enters Region; Commute Will Be Messy

Drivers encouraged to be careful. Winter weather advisory until 10 p.m.

As expected, it’s snowing.

What’s more, it’s snowing just as the region’s workers are about to start commuting home. That means they’ll be sharing the roads with PennDot crews trying to make those roads safe — and PennDot officials hope drivers are patient with the process.

“You get on routes like the Schuylkill Expressway and the Blue Route, we’re pretty much at a crawl — that’s about the rate we can spread salt. We can’t go out ahead of everybody. We have to go with the flow,” Penndot assistant district executive John Krafczyk told KYW Newsradio.

The National Weather Service says its winter weather advisory for the region will last until 10 p.m.:

* Timing … snow will overspread the region from the west during the early afternoon. Sleet may mix with the snow, especially around the onset. The snow is expected to taper to flurries during the evening hours.

* Impacts … The snow will create slippery conditions on roads, walkways and parking lots. The period of greatest impact will include the evening commute. Motorists are urged to use extra caution. The visibility will be reduced by the snow.
