Bill Would Shrink the Pennsylvania House by 50 Seats

What’s not to like about this idea from Pennsylvania House Speaker Sam Smith?

He is sponsoring a measure, House Bill 1234, that would lop 50 seats from the 203-member House, the largest full-time legislative body in the nation.

If the move saves money, that’s fine, the speaker said, but his motivation is to make the House more productive.

“We’d do a better job if we were smaller,” Smith said in a recent interview. “I think we are less efficient because of the difficulty in communicating with one another, understanding one another. When a body of people working together gets to a certain size, it breaks down.”

Of course, if the bill has the support of Pennsylvania Republicans, it must achieve that 50-seat cut by, I dunno, taking away all the seats that Philadelphia currently elects. You know it’s gotta screw us one way or the other.
