Q: How can someone like me, who doesn’t travel much, get upgraded at hotels? —Robbin Darrow, Marlton

A: If you don’t ask, you won’t receive, so consider voicing special requests when making your reservation. Want a larger room? A better view? Say so! And discreetly throw around any professional affiliations you may have. Hotels always show higher levels of appreciation toward their valued, ongoing accounts. Or appeal to the concierge or reservations manager, key staffers who call their own shots in securing upgrades for guests. Mentioning a special occasion (“It’s our anniversary”) may help your cause. Finally, ask to be upgraded upon check-in. This touch of tenacity just could earn you the “suite” life.
