Summer Food: The Tastes of Summer: Blueberries

July is the time for the versatile blueberry. Bake them into pies, cobblers and muffins. Drop them into pancake batter. Add a handful to a bowl of cereal or a fruit shake. Fill freezer containers — don’t wash the berries beforehand — and save them for a dreary day. Get them at Haines Berry Farm, off Route 644, six miles east of the intersection of routes 206 and 38 (98 Sheep Pen Hill Road, Pemberton, 609 – 894 – 8630; hainesberryfarm.com), which also sells blueberry iced tea, jelly and plants, or from North Branch Blueberries (North Branch Road, five miles east of mile marker 31 on Route 70, Browns Mills; 609-893-5693). This market is open daily starting in July, selling fresh berries and blueberry honey.
