Landon Vargas, Blessed by Pope Francis in Philly, Has Died

9-year-old Landon Vargas was blessed by Pope Francis while the pontiff was on his way to Independence Hall. Landon battled cancer for five years.

Landon Vargas, the East Norriton boy in the Batman t-shirt who Pope Francis stopped to bless on the way to Independence Mall in September, has died. The family announced his passing from complications from cancer on a Facebook page dedicated to supporters.

It saddens us to have to say this but our precious son Landon, went to live with God Saturday evening. We will miss him…

Landon, who turned 9 on November 26th, was diagnosed with cancer on his fourth birthday. His father, Ariel Vargas, yelled “Bless him in Spanish!” at Pope Francis as he traveled down 5th Street. Francis told his driver to stop, and blessed the boy after police officers helped bring him to the pope. Ariel is a teacher at William Tennant High School.

“We will miss him dearly but are glad to know he is finally healthy and happy sitting next to our Lord,” the family said in a statement. “Landon was an intelligent, funny and loving 9-year-old that touched many in his short time. He fought valiantly for 5 years. We don’t know anyone tougher or braver than him.”
