To Do: Run the Judy Johnson 5K

Break a sweat to honor a local baseball legend

Run a 5K honoring local baseball hero Judy Johnson

All baseball fans know the name Jackie Robinson, the first African American to sign a contract with a major league team. He opened up the world of professional baseball to talented black players like himself.

But not as many know the story of Judy Johnson, the first black man to coach a major league team (the Phils, of course) and the first player from Delaware to be inducted into the National baseball Hall of Fame. On August 17th, the City of Wilmington Parks and Recreation Running Series will host the Judy Johnson 5K in Brandywine Park to honor this local hero. Overall male and female winners and the top three in each age group will take home an award.

$15 until August 15 ($20 after). Race day is August 17, 6:30 p.m., Brandywine Park, 1001 North Park Drive, Wilmington, 302-654-6400.
