Filmmakers and friends flocked to the opening night of the largest LGBT Film Festival on the East Coast, Philadelphia QFest, which took place on Thursday, July 7, 2011. Presented by the Philadelphia Cinema Alliance, guests at the event viewed two LGBT films and enjoyed a party on the 33rd floor of the Loews Hotel Philadelphia. The second annual High Heel Race benefiting the Melanie Finley Ovarian Cancer Foundation was held in Avalon on Wednesday, June 29, 2011. The race was a 50-yard dash in heels of three inches or higher between Dune and Ocean Drive. On Thursday, July 7, participants celebrated happy hour at Table 31 with hors d'oeuvres by Chef Chris Scarduzio and drink specials. On Thursday, June 30, 2011 World Wide Stereo, along with Monster Cable, hosted a meet-and-greet with the band members of Earth, Wind & Fire. Owner and founder of World Wide Stereo, Bob Cole, served as host for the night, and Phillip Bailey and Ralph Johnson of the band were around to discuss the band, its history, the future of consumer electronics, and the relevancy of music. Over 300 people from the Philly region came out to hear and see the band and to enjoy the Philadelphia-themed foods such as cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, water ice, and Tastykakes. Mayor Michael A. Nutter and General George's Beer Garden got the holiday festivities started early on June 30, 2011 at the National Constitution Center, where guests raised glasses of Beer Garden brews in honor of General Washington. Shore Memorial Hospital celebrated its new Pediatric Care Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community event on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the Hospital's Cancer Center. The new Pediatric Care Center will have its own separate pediatric emergency treatment area and in-patient pediatric rooms. CEO and Hospital President, Ron Johnson was present at the event to cut the ribbon, announcing the opening. At the end of the summer, the hospital will open its new $125 million Surgical Pavilion and Campus Expansion, which is the largest in the hospital's history. Photography by Peter Cicalo.
