American Sniper Earned $90.2 Million at the Box Office This Weekend

Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, starring Jenkintown native Bradley Cooper as prolific Navy SEAL sharp-shooter Chris Kyle, earned a whopping $90.2 million at the weekend box office, and it’s expected to hit $105 million by the end of day on Monday. That blows past insider predictions, who estimated it would bring in $50 million-plus.

Forbes reports that this beats the all-time record for a January opening, which, coincidentally was previously held by another Philly native, Kevin Hart, for Ride Along. That comedy took home $48 million during MLK weekend last year. Sniper also earns the distinction of being the second-biggest R-rated debut of all time, just behind The Matrix Reloaded.

Kevin Hart’s The Wedding Ringer took the second-place slot this weekend, with an estimated $21 million Friday-to-Sunday box office. It’s expected to bring in an extra $4 million by Monday.

Last week it was announced that American Sniper received six Oscar nominations, including one for Best Actor for Cooper, and the coveted Best Picture.
