If you know one song from one opera, it’s probably Puccini’s “Nessun dorma” from the grand Turandot. Opera Philadelphia is performing the epic tale of the princess and her brave suitors at the Academy of Music later this month, but you don’t have to spring for tickets or get dressed up to see it. Turandot is the pick for this year’s always-popular Opera on the Mall, an HD broadcast outdoors on Independence Mall — and it’s free.

The broadcast is Saturday, October 1st. It starts at 7 p.m., though you’ll want to get there early to snag a good spot and get settled in. More than 6,000 people came to Opera on the Mall in past years, but you can’t just show up: Register here. Do it now because this event sells out. You’ll also be entered to win a subscription for two people to the Spring 2017 Opera at the Academy series.

Bring a blanket to stretch out on and definitely bring food. Operas are long.
