Eagles Wake-Up Call: Vick Proclaims, ‘Balance Is Good’

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick.Michael Vick walked off the field gingerly following the Eagles’ 19-17 win over the Giants Sunday night.

“Something happened with my knee on the last drive,” said Vick. “I’m all right though. I’ll be ready for next week. Hopefully.”

While that is enough to bring out some concern, it is heartening to Eagles fans that Vick was not subjected to the inordinate amount of hits that he had endured over the first three games. The Giants managed just three quarterback hits on the night and finished with two sacks. In contrast, the Cardinals hit Vick 13 times in the pocket and the Browns 11 times. It is no coincidence that Marty Mornhinweg dialed up over 100 pass plays between those two games.

Against New York, however, the Eagles ran it 36 times and threw it 30.

How the DB Blitz Has Derailed Vick

Vick continues to struggle against defensive back blitzes, and the league is wise to it. The Eagles’ signal-caller has seen the most defensive back blitzes in the league (tied with Ben Roethlisberger) through three games, according to ESPN Next Level Stats. He is 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) in those situations, which is the worst rate in the NFL.

It’s not surprising, then, that the Cardinals decided to send safety Kerry Rhodes off the edge on one of the most critical plays of the game last Sunday.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Giants Looking To Take Vick Out

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael VickDuring the first Eagles-Giants meeting last season, Chris Canty delivered the blow that knocked Michael Vick out of the game.

After a play-action fake, Vick delivered a beautiful pass to Jeremy Maclin for 23 yards, but Canty nailed him, and the quarterback suffered a bruised right hand. Mike Kafka came in and threw a couple interceptions. The Eagles were outscored, 15-0, in the fourth quarter and were on the losing end of a 29-16 decision.

Tonight will be the first time Vick faces the Giants since that Week 3 matchup in 2011 (he was sidelined for the second meeting). And Jason Pierre-Paul indicates that the Giants are looking to knock him out of the game once again.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Five Numbers That Matter

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo.Let’s break out five Eagles numbers that matter today:

1 – The number of blitzes Juan Castillo dialed up against the Giants in the teams’ Week 11 meeting last season. Eli Manning dropped back to pass 38 times in that game, and the Eagles sent extra pressure just once. They were still able to sack Manning three times and hit him on 10 occasions with their front four. That’s the formula. By my count, the Eagles have blitzed 16 times in the first three weeks. Opposing quarterbacks are 6-for-13 for 109 yards when they send extra pressure. The Eagles also have two sacks (and there was an offensive pass interference penalty). But there’s always risk when you blitz. Of those six completions, three have gone for 20+ yards. DeMeco Ryans has been the most frequent blitzer. He’s gone after the quarterback 14 times, per Pro Football Focus. No other Eagles has blitzed more than five times.

Mornhinweg To Stay In Attack Mode

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. In the midst of defending the Eagles offensive approach, Marty Mornhinweg paused for a second after one of his explanations, then said: “I’m not trying to get sensitive or anything. I try not to.”

The offensive coordinator’s decision-making has come under heavy fire following a 27-6 loss in Arizona, in which he called 25 passes to five runs in the first half. Mornhinweg conceded that he would have approached the game a little differently if he could do it over again. But he also took up for himself, and believes the heavy imbalance in the run-pass ratio was somewhat  justified.

Vick Slowing Down? Giants Say ‘Just Go After Him’

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick.Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka talked about a shifting philosophy both within his organization and around the league when it comes to defending Michael Vick.

“It used to be try and contain him, don’t pressure him because he’ll get by, but now it’s more like, just go after him,” said Kiwanuka, via the New York Post.” We’ve had that philosophy here for a while. We don’t change that. We do that no matter whom we’re playing. I think you’re seeing other teams adopt that same game plan. I think it has just become a point of emphasis for everybody.”

Vick Not Concerned About Job Security

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick.Andy Reid‘s comments about his quarterback situation earlier this week got so much attention that he felt it necessary to set the record straight with Michael Vick.

Asked at what point he will consider a QB change given the high turnover rate, Reid said Monday that Vick was his quarterback “right now” and that they would “evaluate as we go.” That got a lot of wheels turning.

“It was the way it was interpreted,” Reid on Wednesday. “That’s not what I had in mind. I’ve talked to Mike…to make sure we clarified. Bad semantics there.”

“We talked about it. We spoke about it,” said Vick. “But it wasn’t anything serious. We’re in a position where we have to look forward to this week, we have to get ready for this game. That’s what’s most important. Outside distraction can’t become a deterrent to this team.”

All 22: What We Learned About the Eagles’ Offense

Here’s what I saw from the Eagles’ offense after reviewing the All-22 footage from this week.

Before we get started, some overall themes. Number one, the coaches have to take a hit for the game-plan, which was built around the following ideas:

* That DeSean Jackson could get behind the Cardinals’ secondary for big plays.
* That an offensive line with two new guys (Dallas Reynolds and Demetress Bell) would be able to protect Michael Vick well enough to give him time to find receivers way downfield.
* That Vick would hit on the big plays when they were available.

Obviously, not all of those things happened, and hopefully below, you can see why.
