Here’s Where Philly’s Love Affair with Cheese Began 85 Years Ago

A Philadelphia culinary staple, Di Bruno Bros. is a family-run business with its roots in the Italian Market. We spoke with Executive Vice President Sandy Brown to learn more about their growth, passion for Philly, great food and good people.

What is Di Bruno Bros., and how did it start?

At Di Bruno Bros., we’re more than just a food business; we’re a Philadelphia institution with a rich legacy rooted in passion, quality and the joy of sharing exceptional food. Our story began in 1939, when brothers Danny and Joe Di Bruno opened their humble grocery in Philadelphia’s vibrant Italian Market. It was more than a store; it was where their passion for exceptional food and connecting people to its stories began. Today, we remain a family-led business, honoring their legacy by bringing the world’s finest gourmet treasures to Philadelphia and beyond, transforming the way people experience food.

Why develop your business in Philadelphia?

Philadelphia isn’t just where our business is located; it’s the very foundation of who we are. We chose to build and grow Di Bruno Bros. here because Philadelphia is a true city of food lovers, with a rich culinary heritage and a deep appreciation for quality ingredients. The vibrant Italian Market, where we began, offered an unparalleled community spirit and a natural audience eager for the artisanal cheeses, cured meats and gourmet products we cherish. As Philadelphia has evolved, its diverse culinary landscape and ongoing growth have continuously presented opportunities for us to expand our offerings and reach. We’ve been fortunate to build our business alongside generations of Philadelphians, becoming part of their traditions and everyday meals.

How has the city supported your business?

This city’s been our biggest fan and our secret ingredient! From our first shop, the city embraced our mission, eagerly discovering new flavors and spreading the word. Their boundless energy for gatherings, sports and simply enjoying great food has continually fueled our growth, inspiring every hoagie and catering spread.

How does your company support the greater Philadelphia community?

At Di Bruno Bros., our commitment to Philadelphia goes beyond gourmet food. We combat food insecurity by partnering with organizations like Philabundance, regularly donating high-quality products to local food banks. Our engagement extends to supporting local nonprofits through catering and donations for fundraisers, and inspiring future generations by participating in school culinary programs and offering store tours.

What is one thing that Philadelphians would be surprised to know about your business?

Even our most devoted Philadelphian fans might be surprised: our legendary cheese cave, tucked beneath our Italian Market flagship, actively ages and houses over 500 different varieties of cheese from around the world! That’s more unique cheeses than days in a year, a truly hidden, living marvel of flavor right here in our city.
