If your last trip to the shore involved strategizing for an uncrowded spot in the sand, dodging the midday heat and lugging an overstuffed cooler across the beach, consider this your invitation to try something different: go in the fall.

Autumn opens up more room for the kind of weekend that moves easily from a morning outside to a long dinner, with live music, golf and cooler weather filling the hours in between.

In Ocean City, Maryland, that shift makes fall feel less like an extension of summer and more like its own kind of getaway, complete with championship golf courses, major music festivals, updated dining spots and plenty of time by the water without the peak-season rush.

Friday: Arrive with an Appetite

By the time you reach the bay, the light is getting softer, the air has cooled and the first order of business is obvious: find a seat near the water.

At Saltwater 75, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Every table overlooks the bay, so dinner easily turns into an evening of seafood, sunsets and conversation. Afterward, grab a drink upstairs at the rooftop bar and settle into vacation mode.

For something with more of a white-tablecloth vibe, The Hobbit offers floor-to-ceiling bay views and a seafood-forward menu, including duck breast with couscous, sticky dates and spiced jus. Closer to the Inlet, The Wedge keeps things casual with blackened shrimp tacos, specialty cocktails and mocktails, with passing boats and Assateague as the backdrop.

Saturday: Unwind and Escape

Enjoy a quieter side of the beach before the party starts later. In the morning, pull on your favorite sweater, grab a coffee and take a stroll along the shoreline.

Then trade the walk for two wheels. After Labor Day, Ocean City lifts seasonal Boardwalk bicycling restrictions, allowing riders more freedom to cruise the Boardwalk throughout the fall. Enjoy the views while stopping to browse local staples like Malibu’s Surf Shop or grab a bucket of candy from Dolle’s Candyland.

In the afternoon, turn up the volume at Oceans Calling (September 25–27). The three-day festival brings more than 40 performances to three stages along the beach and Boardwalk, with a lineup that includes Dave Matthews Band, Hootie & the Blowfish, Mumford & Sons, Twenty One Pilots and Gwen Stefani. The following weekend, Country Calling (October 2-3) keeps the music going with two days of country performances in the same oceanfront setting.

Sunday: One Last Stop

Instead of rushing home, opt for the scenic route back, stopping near Assateague for a round at Eagle’s Landing Golf Course or a morning of kayaking at Assateague Island National Seashore. Keep an eye out for wild horses, migrating shorebirds and seasonal waterfowl along the way.

Then make one final detour through Berlin, where the Sunday farmers market runs through October with local produce, seafood, baked goods—from traditional pies to alfajores—live music, and handmade treasures. Grab something for the road, wander downtown and stretch the weekend just a little longer before heading back to reality.
