Log houses may say “roughing it” on the outside, but on the inside, they’re usually very civilized. This log house in the woods at 427 Little Wing Rd., Canadensis, Pa. 18325, is no exception. | Pocono Mountains Association of Realtors MLS images via Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Wilkins & Associates

Monroe County, wedged in between Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and the northwest New Jersey hinterlands of New York, is the heart of the Pocono Mountains resort region. Being slightly easier to reach by highway from New York than from Philadelphia, the Poconos are slowly getting sucked into the New York orbit: the county to Monroe’s northeast, Pike, is even part of the New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. (Monroe, home to the Stroudsburgs, is not, however; it’s its own MSA.)

But New Yorkers who want to summer or winter in a conveniently located mountain resort area also have the Catskills and Berkshires to light out for. For us Philadephians, it’s the Poconos or nothing.

And fortunately for us, the New Yorkers have yet to completely overrun the place and send the house prices shooting through the roof. Which means that you have a slew of attractively priced houses to choose from when looking for a vacation home in the mountains.

This is one of the more expensive Poconos houses we’ve run across. But this Canadensis log house for sale is also one of the roomer ones, with more than 4,000 square feet of interior space. In terms of price per square foot, it’s still very reasonable, even by Philadelphia standards.

And what do you get for your $149 per square foot? A rustic yet totally modern log house that has all the creature comforts you might want.

The kitchen has darker chocolate wood cabinets, granite countertops and up-to-date stainless-steel appliances. It also has a pass-through window to the sunroom in back of it.  It looks like it got an upgrade since this house was built 30 years ago.

But as you can see, the rest of the house has held up very well over those 30 years. It has a spacious primary bedroom with a sitting area and a bathroom with a jetted tub.

And down below all this, the walkout basement offers 1,400 square feet that you can outfit as you like: game room, media room, bar, party space, all of the above. Along with the nicely groomed backyard outside its doors, you have a great space for socially distanced indoor/outdoor entertaining, or for a large crowd once we’ve achieved herd immunity through vaccination.

And the beauty of owning this Canadensis log house for sale is, it’s entirely up to you whether or not to deal with a crowd. As this house is in Monroe County’s northeast corner, you will be well away from not only its population centers down by the Delaware Water Gap but also most of its most popular resorts. If you enjoy hunting, you can get your fill in nearby state game lands or join one of the even closer hunting clubs. If communing with nature is more your speed, there are both state and privately managed parks all around you. And, of course, there are your own 5.5 acres, which include a pond and stream where you can fish.

Civilized creature comforts, rustic charm, and a true rural setting. It would be a shame to have all this land in the lap of some New Yorker, wouldn’t it?
