City House of the Week: Grand Gothic Revival Near Rittenhouse Square
The 2200 block of Saint James Street in Rittenhouse is awash with the beautiful facades of some gorgeous homes. The north side of the street generally flaunts tall houses with straightforward windows, while ornate arched windows are the popular choice with its south side homes. Just off of the corner of 23rd and Saint James is a 25-foot wide home that speaks to the architectural history and character of the block’s southern side, and it’s one that shouldn’t be missed.
The outside of the Gothic Revival home, with its pointed cornice line and arched windows, has that historic city charm. Given that the home was built around 1862, it’s an authentic vibe at that. Inside, the 3-story (and skylit) staircase is one of the many standouts, followed closely by the home’s original details, such as the 11-foot ceilings, six (!) fireplaces and original doors. Plenty of natural light to streams into the home via its pleasant mix of tall and wide windows.
If you’d like to boost your Vitamin D levels and grab some fresh air, the rear of the home features a spacious brick patio area that has offers raised beds with greenery and a spiral staircase to the upper floors of the home. Of course, you could always take the short walk in almost any direction and find yourself at one of the city’s premier parks and restaurant scenes. This home is steps from Rittenhouse Square, Schuylkill River Park/Trail and even Fitler Square.
Here’s a bonus: The first floor of the home boasts a separate apartment with its own private entry and interior staircase. It’s a flexible space that could be used as-is or even incorporated into those layout of the rest of the home.
