The couple: Alicia Torpey and Kevin McLeish, Philadelphia.

The ring: My ring has a princess0cut center stone with six smaller diamonds on each side of the band. We had never gone out looking at rings ,and I never showed him any pictures. When we talked about getting married, I mentioned the type of ring I like. From what I told him, he picked out my ring on his own (he went to Harzin Jewelers on Sansom), and the ring he chose was exactly what I pictured for myself.

The proposal: This past summer, we went on vacation to New England. We went to Boston, Bar Harbor, Maine, and then our last stop was a mountain-top cottage in Goffstown, New Hampshire.

We originally planned to go out to dinner the night we arrived, but since we drove for a few hours that day, Kevin said he was tired and asked if we could make dinner at the cottage. I agreed to that. That night, he made dinner, and after eating outside on the deck of the cottage where there was a beautiful mountain-top view, we stayed on the deck to watch the sunset. We were talking about how nice our trip had been when the next thing I knew, Kevin got down on his knee and asked me to marry him. I said, “Of course!” I was totally shocked. We had discussed getting married, but I did not expect a proposal at that time. I was about to start my last year of graduate school and thought it would happen closer to me finishing.

The band: My grandmother left me a beautiful diamond and opal ring when she passed away. I would like the diamonds from the ring to be made into my wedding band, and the opal made into a pendent that I can incorporate into my wedding attire.
