“Con Artist” Considers Run for City Council

Possible candidate Lewis Thomas III admits to lying about his past.

Daily News reporter William Bender wasn’t kidding.

In an article published today, Bender chronicles the bizarre tale of Lewis Thomas III, who is considering running for Philadelphia’s 5th District Council seat if Council President Darrell Clarke decides to run for mayor.

What’s so unusual about that? Thomas appears to have fibbed about his professional and academic past. Extensively.

In an interview with the Daily News yesterday, Thomas finally stopped bobbing and weaving, as he has in past news stories. He came clean for the first time — sort of. He admitted to lying about having a doctorate from Howard University. He doesn’t have a master’s, either, he said.

“Obviously, I had embellished my resume,” he said. “I should have been honest. I should have never done it. I’ve learned over time the way you represent yourself is how people will perceive you. You have to be open and honest about your credentials.”

Thomas said he has spent the past six months building up political and financial support for a possible campaign.
