John du Pont Stamp Could Sell for $20 Million at Auction

Millionaire murderer was also a stamp collector.

John du Pont’s estate is selling a rare stamp — so prized that it’s expected to attract bids of up to $20 million at auction. Du Pont himself set a record when he bought it for $935,000 in 1980.

Du Pont, the millionaire wrestling aficionado, is best-remembered for the 1996 murder of Olympic gold medal wrestler Dave Schultz on du Pont’s 800-acre farm in Delaware County. du Pont died 2010 at the age of 72.

The stamp — issued in British Guiana in 1856 — has a storied history. The Daily Mail reports: “As per du Pont’s will, 80 per cent of the proceeds will go to the family of his friend, Bulgarian wrestler Valentin Jordanov Dimitrov, and 20 per cent will go to the Eurasian Pacific Wildlife Foundation, based in Paoli, Pennsylvania, which du Pont founded to support wildlife preservation in the Pacific.” (Daily Mail)
