Fetters Mill Bridge Closes

Pennypack Creek just got a little safer.

The perpetually troublesome Fetters Mill Bridge, which is more than a century old, has been shut down by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

During a routine PennDot inspection, it was discovered that beams supporting the Fetters Mill Bridge were deteriorating and need to be replaced or rehabbed,” Montgomery County spokeswoman Jessica Willingham said. “The bridge was ordered to be closed immediately due to concerns for the safety of users, which is a top priority.”

Since its last shutdown, in the spring, strict weight restrictions had already been imposed–only one car had been allowed to cross at a time. The bridge connected Lower Moreland and Bryn Athyn. [Philly.com]
