Building Collapses in West Philly

Witness says demolition was being conducted by L&I, by hand.

A home in the Cedar Park section of West Philadelphia collapsed Monday night. A neighbor, who said he’d  called 911 about the property, explained that the home had been in the process of a controlled demolition that was being conducted by the Department of Licenses and Inspections.

The neighbor, who declined to give his name, said he called 911 about the house at 727 S. 50th Street last week when it began raining and said that L&I responded swiftly and began demolishing the building by hand.

“Everything was being followed,” he said. “Everybody’s been very cooperative.”

The property is listed as owned by Jessie Medley and William Medley, Jr., and has $6,100 of liens placed against it.

Neither L&I nor the Police Department responded to multiple requests for comment.
