Phil Sheridan Will Cover Eagles for ESPN

We knew ESPN was going to start covering the Eagles with a full-time blogger. What we probably should’ve mentioned is that ESPN’s practice is to hire top talent already covering a team, that way he or she can jump in knowing the lay of the land already.

Which is to say: ESPN has hired the Inky’s Phil Sheridan to be its Eagles beat reporter. He covered the team seven years before coming a sports columnist for the paper.

Which means the local papers aren’t just competing with ESPN—and all its resources—for scoops. They’re competing for talent. Which makes ESPN an even more dangerous rival. (Full disclosure: They’ll be competing with PhillyMag’s Birds 24/7 blog, as well.) Everybody better have their grownup pants on.
