The Check-Up: Our Air Is Unhealthy

The Philly area's a top 10 smog region, a new report says

A report out yesterday found that in 2010, Philly had 29 days of dangerous air pollution levels, ranking our region the eighth smoggiest in the country. Of those 29 days, three were in “red-alert” territory, meaning the pollution was bad enough that you may have begun to experience adverse health effects, including difficulty breathing, asthma and decreased lung function. When you reshuffle the list to compare large metropolitan areas only—those with populations of 1 million or more—we come in fifth nationwide. And in a state ranking, New Jersey and Pennsylvania tie for fifth smoggiest with 35 smog days a piece. Yikes.
