Flyers Trade Richards, Carter to Sign Goalie Bryzgalov

Philly dealt their captain to the Kings and Carter to the Blue Jackets today and signed goalie Ilya Bryzgalov

The Philadelphia Flyers have had a busy day. First their 2011-12 schedule comes out detailing their league-opening game against the Stanley Cup Champion (ugh) Boston Bruins and the Winter Classic game on January 2 with the Rangers in Citizens Bank Park. Now we’ve learned they’ve traded team captain Mike Richards to the L.A. Kings for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds—both forwards—and a second-round draft pick. They’ve also traded Jeff Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets. For Carter, the club received 2007 first-round pick Jakub Voracek—a forward—and first and third round picks in this year’s NHL amateur draft, which starts tomorrow. The team earned themselves some breathing room under the NHL salary cap by dumping the two young stars—cap space they used to ink goalie (!) Ilya Bryzgalov to a nine year, $51 million contract. The Scoop is looking forward to some consistency between the pipes, but, with Richards and Carter leaving town, wants to know who’s going to be running up tabs in Old City for Philly’s young female demographic.
