Eagles Wake-Up Call

Each morning during training camp, we’ll be bringing you the Eagles wake-up call with links and notes from Lehigh. In this installment, Brian Dawkins talks about Michael Vick’s weakness, Vick vows to slide for the President and someone boldly predicts the Eagles will do what?

Eagles Practice Observations

On one of the first plays today, Nnamdi Asomugha lined up inside against backup tight end Chase Ford. Last year, playing Asmougha inside was simple because the Eagles had Asante Samuel and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on the outside. But Samuel’s gone, and the new wrinkle today was that Curtis Marsh lined up outside at right cornerback.

Marsh, a third-round pick in 2011, played only 13 defensive snaps as a rookie. But with Samuel gone, he’s looking to fill a bigger role in his second season.

“We rotate. We have different guys that do different things well. It’s by gameplan,” Marsh said.

Vick Will Slide On First Run Of The Year For Obama

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Michael VickMichael Vick is still on a high after learning that the President of the United States is hip to his game and wants the QB to start sliding this season.

In true campaign form, Vick vowed he would change and made a promise to the President Obama.

“I was stunned. I didn’t believe it. It was awesome, though,” said Vick of being recognized by the most powerful man in the world. “You think to yourself, ‘Yo, man, he’s got a point.’ If he says it then I’ve got to do it, so the first run of the year I’ll slide and he’ll know it was for him.”

Celek Leaves With Knee Sprain

A lot of activity around the tight end position these days.

Brent Celek left practice early with what the team is calling a mild right knee sprain. He only got in a couple reps before disapperaring. If you’re looking for good news, at least it’s not his hip, which he had surgery on this offseason.

Twitter Mailbag: Love, Bears and Backs Edition

Every Thursday we’ll roll out a Twitter Mailbag. Pretty simple: We take questions you have asked us on Twitter, and publish them here with more long-form answers. This week we find out we’re too hot for the workplace, and are asked about all things from bear-fighting to the tight end situation.

Eagles Training Camp Preview: Cornerbacks

How will the Eagles use Nnamdi Asomugha in 2012? Will Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie have the same tackling issues Asante Samuel had? And what are the chances that undrafted free agent Cliff Harris makes the roster? Answering those questions and more in this breakdown of the Eagles cornerback situation.

Eagles Training Camp Preview: Wide Receivers

The Eagles had quality receivers in name only last season. Jackson wasn’t himself because of the contract situation and Jeremy Maclin didn’t hit his stride until the last handful of games following his health scare.

Consider: Maclin’s touchdowns were cut in half, scoring five in 2011 after finding the end zone 10 times the year prior. Jackson gained almost 100 yards less than the season before despite catching 11 more balls, and his four receiving TDs were the lowest for him since his rookie season.

As I noted earlier, wide receivers coach David Culley believes Cooper also would have flourished a good deal more if not for the lockout, and says he has benefitted significantly from this offseason.

In a season full of expectations dashed, the wideouts took a back seat to no one. The group should return to its non-distracted form.

Thanks To Philly, Kolb ‘Numb’ To Controversy

It’s hard to believe less than a year has passed since the Eagles traded Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals.

At the time, it seemed like Kolb would finally get his chance. After sitting patiently behind Donovan McNabb, suffering an injury in the first game of the 2011 season and getting passed over for Michael Vick, Kolb signed a six-year, $65M contract and appeared set to be the Cardinals’ signal-caller for years to come.

But things didn’t exactly go according to plan.

Eagles Wake-Up Call

Each morning during training camp, we’ll bring you the Eagles wake-up call with links and notes from Lehigh. Today’s version covers the possibility of the Eagles adding veteran running back Joseph Addai and more.

DeSean Agitated By Giants Super Bowl Run

DeSean Jackson used his first media session of the 2012 season to voice his displeasure over the Giants being crowned Super Bowl champs. “To see […]

Obama: Tell Vick To Slide

Among the many who feel Michael Vick needs to tweak his style of play for the Eagles to be successful, we can now count the President of the United States.

Nnamdi Asomugha arrived at Lehigh Wednesday afternoon and discussed how he’s been spending his time since the Eagles ended OTAs and mini-camps in June. The Birds’ starting cornerback spent some time with Barack Obama recently, and the pair actually talked football.

Asked if Obama had any advice for the Eagles, Asomugha, surprisingly, said yes.

“He told me to tell Vick to slide,” Asomugha said with a laugh.

McCoy: Vick Has Asked Me To Lead

LeSean McCoy arrived at training camp weighing in at 211 pounds and proclaiming that he is in better shape than he was in last year, when he soared up the rankings to become one of the best backs in the game. The goal, he says, is to take the next step.

“Next step, I want to be considered as the best back in the league,” said McCoy. “I think I have a lot of room for improvement. Guys talk about players as the best backs — you probably say [Adrian Peterson] or [Arian] Foster or [Ray] Rice. I want to be one of them guys at the end of the day where they say, “McCoy.”

Eagles Training Camp Preview: Safeties

What’s the deal with second-year player Jaiquawn Jarrett? And can veteran O.J. Atogwe push for a starting job? A look at those questions and more in our training camp preview of the Eagles’ safeties.

Washburn: No Need To Motivate Graham

Jim Washburn rarely holds back.

Through two-and-a-half days of training camp at Lehigh, the Eagles defensive line coach has been as vocal as ever. The fact that there are probably only two defensive linemen here (Fletcher Cox and Vinny Curry) who will make the roster doesn’t matter to him. He prides himself on being able to motivate everyone – from Pro Bowlers like Trent Cole to undrafted free agents.

But when Brandon Graham steps onto the field later this week, Washburn is pretty sure motivation won’t be an issue.

“He doesn’t need Vinny Curry to motivate him,” Washburn said, referring to the fact that the Eagles spent a second-round pick on another defensive end. “He’s got everything to motivate him. He’s been beat down. That’s the way it goes, right? You’re a first-round draft choice. You don’t produce great the first year. The guy up north [Jason Pierre-Paul] playing his ass off. People throw that in his face all the time. Somebody said, ‘You gonna pimp him to death?’ I said uh-uh. I don’t have to. I don’t need to.”

Quick Notes From Reid Presser

Andy Reid addressed all the buzz around the tight end position

“We’re keeping all our options open,” said Reid. “It has nothing to do with Clay [Harbor] or [Brent] Celek coming off [the injury], there were a couple tight ends out there that we liked and thought we’d take a look at, and that’s where that went. Asked if they have anybody else coming in, Reid responded, “No, we don’t.”
